We love the idea that better health can be bought, opened, and sipped. With convenience
at the center of innovation and marketing, it’s no surprise that gut health has made its way into a can. For anybody who wants a simple improvement in gut health without any major lifestyle changes, functional drinks like prebiotic sodas are a promising alternative to regular sodas. Prebiotic sodas deliver on that promise in many ways, but not just in the ways that we expect.
Why do prebiotic sodas work?
If you’ve been in a grocery store lately, you’ve probably seen prebiotic sodas like Poppi,
Olipop, or Bloom Pop. Why are they so popular?
One of the most important things that prebiotic sodas get right has nothing to do with the
gut microbiome or fiber, it’s the taste. Prebiotic sodas mimic the soda experience by offering
carbonation, sweetness, flavor variety, and that crisp sound of cracking open the can, allowing an easy swap for any soda-lover. It doesn’t ask people to change their habits, just to change what is in the can.
Beyond the taste, prebiotic sodas contain two ingredients that have been studied for their effects on gut and metabolic health: prebiotic fiber (inulin) and apple cider vinegar. Inulin is a soluble fiber that isn’t digested by human enzymes, but is instead fermented by gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. These bacteria can then produce short-chain fatty acids, which support bowel functions, mineral absorption, and can even help blood glucose and lipid levels.
Poppi and Bloom Pop also contain apple cider vinegar, which contributes acetic acid and
other bioactive compounds. While there is less research surrounding apple cider vinegar, some studies suggest that it can influence digestion and help make the gut environment less suitable for certain Firmicutes, suggesting a possible link to gut health improvement.
Your gut needs more than just a drink.
Poppi can give your gut a little boost, but for lasting gut health benefits, you’ll need to go
beyond the can. Broader nutritional patterns play a major role in achieving long-term health
improvement. Dietary fiber from whole foods such as vegetables, legumes, and whole grains
support a diverse microbiome and promote production of short-chain fatty acids, both of which are linked to improved digestion and immune function.
Diet-induced changes to the gut microbiome can also affect inflammatory pathways,
metabolic processes, and signaling between the gut and the brain, which can influence
everything from immune function to mood and cognition. Systemic health outcomes like obesity and stress-eating are deeply intertwined with the biological, environmental, and behavioral factors that shape our gut microbiomes, highlighting the fact that lasting improvement requires much more than just isolated ingredients.
From one sip to lasting habits.
Prebiotic sodas deserve credit for finding a unique way of making healthier choices easier
and more approachable, while also introducing many to the importance of the gut microbiome. They allow people to swap out high-sugar beverages for flavorful and slightly more nourishing alternatives, and act as a gateway to making better habits. However, it is important to realize that the majority of the benefits of a healthy gut microbiome, such as improved digestion, immunity, and metabolism, are largely the results of daily dietary patterns, not a single drink. Incorporating vegetables, legumes, grains, and other fiber-rich ingredients to your daily intake will create a thriving microbiome environment and bring about noticeable health benefits. Prebiotic sodas are a great first step in the journey, opening the door to more sustainable changes in diet and lifestyle.
